- Exam 1: will be on Tuesday, March 4, during class
Please note: The practice exams below provide a good sense of the scope and
rigor of our Exam 1. However, formatting of the exam, and the kinds of questions
and ways they are asked on our exam may be different. In particular, the exams
will be similar to American Chemical Society (ACS) exams (more like the Newer
Practice Exam). You will also find it helpful to use the student study guide
for ACS exams.

- Analysis
of most common difficulties on Exam 1 - Hopefully this will help you
to diagnose and avoid the most common mistakes on the exam.
- For a list of concepts and skills to be covered on Exam 1, please refer
to the Final Exam study guide below. The exam will contain both multiple-choice
and open response questions.
- Rules on the exam:
- When you enter Lipke Auditorium, sit in every other row, every other
seat (there will be a picture on the front screen to help you figure
out which lettered rows to sit in).
- Bring with you a #2 pencil and an eraser (you will need to fill out
bubble sheets for the multiple-choice part of the exam).
- You will need a calculator (cell phone calculators and Palm Pilot/other
PDA calculators are not allowed); you may not share a calculator with
anyone.
- You will be provided with scratch paper; you may not use your own
scratch paper.
- As with any UMass course, academic honesty policies apply, and anyone
who is caught cheating will be brought up on academic dishonesty charges
(so, please don't cheat).
- The exam starts promptly at 10:00 and ends promptly at 11:20 (no exceptions,
unless you have provided me with paperwork in advance from the Ross
Center).
- If you arrive late to the exam, and if no one has turned in an exam
yet, you will be allowed to start the exam, but you must still turn
in your exam by 11:20.
- Exam 2: will be on Tuesday, April 8, during class.
- Exam 3: will be on Tuesday, May 6, during class.
- Final Exam: as officially scheduled (will also post here when the official
schedule is announced)
Important: No graphing calculators allowed.
Use the ACS study guide for students to help prepare you for the exam. We
will take the ACS exam.
- Study
guide for Spring 2006 Final Exam: This study guide is from last year,
but the chemistry content we have covered in this year's course is the same
as last year, so the study guide remains the same.
- Information that will be provided
with exam (note: no equations are provided on the exam)
Do not forget to bring: a #2 pencil, an eraser, a calculator (but not a
graphing calculator). You will be provided with scratch paper - you may
not use your own scratch paper that you bring. The ACS exam will be 120
minutes (timed), with 70 multiple-choice questions. The exam will begin
shortly after 8:00, after everyone has filled out their information (name,
student ID #, etc.) on the bubble sheets. If you arrive late to the exam,
you will not receive extra time.
